Backwards handwriting

Forwards handwriting

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog

Was it what you expected??

If so – congratulations! If not – don’t feel bad. Figuring out backwards handwriting is seriously difficult (though not quite a difficult as backwards speech).

Now that you know what it says, maybe you can ‘read’ the backwards version more easily. You might (or might not) like to spend some time comparing the print, the forwards running writing, and the backwards running writing. What can you say about their relationships to one another?

You might even be able to create your own backwards writing. Hold it up to a mirror to see how accurate you are! Perhaps you know that famous inventor Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards in his notebooks, to keep his ideas from prying eyes. Does this exercise give you new respect for his skill?

Do you think you could ever learn to speak backwards? It is far harder than writing backwards. But believe it or not, some people have become famous for developing this skill. Interestingly, however,  they vary quite a lot in what they mean by ‘backwards’. We have some examples for you to analyse. Ask for more information if this is something you would like to do.
